Anyone go with the power performance kit?

Hey guys
Just wondering if anyone here has got the stage 1 performance kit (the ECU reprogramming said to give you 20bhp). I'm mostly wondering how much it cost you, as I see the list price on the BMW site is in the region of 900 quid, but I've seen Americans talking about 600 dollars before.

Also wondering if you noticed much difference?

If I can get it at a decent price, I'll probably have it done the same time I have my performance exhaust fitted

I think you'll have to find a VERY friendly dealer to pick one up for £900 - it does seem a bit expensive for the gains but there's a lot more to it than a simple remap

Had the kit fitted to my 320D couple of years back. Car runs 203bhp these days. Its not only a remap but also a new intercooler and cooling fan on manual cars anwyay. Its not cheap but gives you full warranty on the car intact as its official. Thats main reason I did it as wanted to keep fully warranty especialy with the horror stories and my luck with cars going around.

You could always get the Fan and FMIC and do a custom map , just case if you want a solid warranty on the car.

Either way the results are great it shows how the engine should be stock out of factory no flat spots, pulls well and still good mpg

I did a general google, Ian. Thanks for the links. Was looking for something a bit more recent than 2011 to reflect current prices.

magic, I think the intercooler and fan only comes with the stage 2 performance kit. I thought the basic stage 1 performance kit was literally just a remap and some engine bay stickers? I saw an installation PDF that BMW use and those are the only parts it mentioned at least.

Not something I heard of. To my knowledge there is only one performance kit from BMW for the 320D and that comes with fan, fmic and a remap. If you have an auto box you also get a new torque converter hence it costs even more for the auto cars.

This was the case when I got mine

lol....i don't think you will get an intercooler with the performance kit....i know it's a few cooling ducts....and an addtional fan....and i think... an addtional oil cooler.... but thats for the whole kit...

I think just for a remap....£900 is definitely not worth it!....

Magic77, they are referencing the performance package for a 335i not a 320d.

Hmm! Seems the kits are a bit different depending on the car? For the 320d it does appear that there is just that kit and that kit alone, but for the 335i it talks of variant 1 and variant 2 packages.

Sods law. I can't find the install PDF I randomly found earlier. There was no mention of additional gear in it though, it literally just said to code the upgrade and apply stickers to the engine bay... lol

Variant 1 = Just a 20hp remap and magic stickers
Variant 2 = Remap plus a replacement high power fan and an additional water cooler

The first one is most likely the £940 one and the second is a lot more than that.

For that price I'd rather spend it on a Cobb/JB4 and the rest on whatever vice(s) you have.

Thanks guys, I appreciate there are better value after market options out there but the thing for me is that it's BMW approved and will not void any warranty or anything, and is also likely to look more attractive in the future when I come to sell the car over an after market thing.

But I've just run into a requirement for the kit. Apparently you need option code S840 which is an additional oil cooler and the higher 155mph speed on the limiter. I used a VIN decoder and couldn't see that option specified. I kind of thought that on a top spec car like the 335i that the additional oil cooler would be installed as standard, and I thought all BMWs were limited to 155 anyway.

So I'm going to check in the morning if I have the oil cooler. Apparently if you look turn the wheel to the left, you should be able to see a vent for the oil cooler in the right hand driver wheel arch. The top speed limiter would just be a case of coding then.

I also wanted power folding mirrors only to find out that they rely on having the fully electric seats with memory. Nothing's ever simple is it?!

@idnan
I'm going to request they don't put the stickers on. It's going to screw up power to weight ratio man

I would not bother for 20bhp. The JB4 can be removed very quickly, get a ride in a car with one fitted see if you change your mind

All UK cars have oil coolers and the 155mph limiter, the US cars didn't get these as standard on some models.

The 335i is almost scary enough as it is. Is it just me or does the front end/steering feel a bit light at speed/acceleration? This is my first time with a car this powerful. Last car was a 100bhp Mk4 Golf LOL.

@idnan
Wow how about that, living in the UK pays off for once!

The 335 should feel pretty planted, get the front control arms checked if it feels vague.

I've enquired at 2 dealers about the BMW power kit. All in the best quote I got was £2k. Personally I have no problems spending money on mods that are worth it....

The main attraction for me is the extra cooling the kit provides. However a quick search on the US forums showed that even with the kit fitted the car still over heats when pushed....and than if you think about it you already have a massive radiator on the car, adding a tiny secondary radiator is hardly to going to make a massive difference.

I'm currently seriously considering putting an order in for the ER Competition Oil Cooler from the states. All in I reckon it'll cost £1.5k (imported and fitted) so £500 cheaper than the BMW option...but you get 700% extra oil cooling capacity compared to stock, which in my view is worth the cost.

So which ever way you look at it, extra cooling to extra power the BMW kit is VERY VERY POOR value for money....but hey it does come with an extra BMW Performance sticker for your engine bay, that must be worth £500 alone

The JB4 can be made invisible for quick dealer trips. If you're really worried, it takes 45 mins to remove. (Once you've done it once, its really easy)
Makes a completely different car. Anyone who has one will tell you this. And the best thing is, £/hp is an absoloute bargain!

I wouldn't waste money on the BMW pack. Seems like a bit of a rip off.
