Adding charging flashlight to LCI E9X
Figured I'm not the only one that enjoys the little things and wanted a charging flashlight in an LCI E9X. Not really a challenging project however I could not find any information at all on even starting the project.
First off you will need the back portion of the glovebox off of a pre LCI that came with the flashlight, or the entire glovebox. I went for just the back piece as i got it with all of the attachments for $10 at a local junkyard. You will also need the flashlight, the flashlight charger, the plug for the back of the flashlight charger, and some wire. I can grab any part numbers if needed. Start by taking off the trim piece around the cup holders, as weird as it is the cup holders actually hold the glovebox in. Start at the right side of the trim piece and work left, it can be on very tight. Then take off the two Phillips screws on each cupholder and slide the entire cupholder housings out. Now on to the glovebox. There are four torx (I believe t-20) screws on the top of the inside of the glove box as well as one on each side that need to be removed. Once those are removed the glovebox should slide down and out. Once out you will need to unplug the glove box light, the trunk lock switch, and the USB port. It will be much easier if you remove the face of the glove box regardless of if you got a whole new one or not as you will need to cut inside of the glovebox. The damper solanoid on the glovebox can be taken off by pulling out the small push rivet on the bottom and then squezing the clip on the top of it to slide it out. You will then need to remove the four torx screws holding the hinges on and the face should come off. Going back I wish I had marked where the torx screws were in some way as they are used to align the latch so it closes without rubbing. Now with the face off I removed all lights and plugs to put them in the new one and cleaned the new one off. Now the fun part. you will need to cut a 18mm wide by 15mm tall square hole in the new one to put the USB port in. I will attach some pictures at the bottom to show where I did it. Now your ready to put it back together and put the face back on. This is where the marks for the torx screws come in handy as I spent the most time on this project adjusting those so the latch would close without rubbing. before you put your glovebox back in the car find the brown and orange/yellow wires going to the light those are the ones you will need to tap. Not 100% sure which is positive and negative as I pulled the plug from the junk car and it was color coded. However I can tell you the brown wire goes to the top of the plug as it sits in the glove box. I tapped in about an inch below where the trunk lock wires split off of the harness and used about 4 inches of wire and that worked out good. Once you have it wired up your ready to plug everything in and and put it back together. Trickiest part here is getting the driver cup holder back in the little hole on top of the glove box but it will go. Happy to answer any questions, add pictures, part numbers or any other info sorry for no pics in the how to, but I am writing this on the phone and cant quite figure it out so I will add some on the bottom. |
